  • Addiction

    Current mood:happy
Okay, I am going to admit it.....I have an addiction.......to Grey's Anatomy!  I only started watching the show this summer while it was being re-aired during the off season because Dan and I always watched CSI on Thursdays, and I have this thing where if I don't start watching a show from the beginning, I just can't seem to get into it mid season.  Well, I have rented season 1 and 2 of Grey's Anatomy and am all caught up and have thus started my addiction.  We now have a DVR because we have a baby and can't always watch our shows when they are on, and so far I have watched last nights episode of Grey's Anatomy twice and that probably won't be it.  I love the characters, I love the story lines and I feel like these people are my friends, I know, I'm a weirdo....I have not been as "into" a show as Grey's Anatomy since my girls from Sex and the City.  Okay, that's all.  Just thought I needed to admit to my addiction!
  • Breastfeeding in whose public?

    Current mood:frustrated
I was shopping in Wal-Mart yesterday with Dan and Madeline looking for nursing bras.  Maddie had been asleep up until the end of the shopping when she woke up and was hungry.  I got her out of her car seat and walked over to the dressing rooms and asked the girl working the dressing rooms if I could go into one of the rooms to nurse my baby.  The girl (who was approx. 23-24) looked at me weirdly and said that she didn't know if it was okay for me to nurse in the dresing room.  I told her that I could either walk around the store with my boob hanging out, or I could modestly nurse my baby in a private dressing room.  She told me that so many people go in and out of the dressing rooms and implied that it wasn't the cleanest place for me to nurse Maddie and that if I were her, I would go into the Wal-Mart bathroom and nurse in the handicapped stall.  I looked at her like she was crazy....she thought it was a better idea for me to take my 2 week old into the nasty public restroom and sit on the toilet to nurse her.  I told her to call a manager and ask permission for me to nurse in the dressing room.  She made the call and over the phone the manager apparently told her that I could use the dressing room because she said yes, and then got another phone call and told me to wait while she talked to someone else on the phone all the while Maddie is getting more and more upset and starting to holler.  I took the matter into my own hands and broke the Wal-Mart law.....I let myself in the dressing room!!
I holed up in the dressing room and fed my child, but am still reeling from the experience.  I can not believe how ignorant society is on breastfeeding and that I have to battle to be able to hide in a dressing room and breastfeed.  Next time I may just throw my own modesty to the wind and whip it out in the store and make everyone uncomfortable.  We need some kind of education program for this!
Breastfeeding in Whose Public?by Peggy O'Mara
It is unnecessary to defend breastfeeding in public. To me, it's like walking in public. It's a basic human right. For others, however "those who live in a bottle-feeding culture with little or no apparent exposure to breastfeeding" the act is a private matter. How little they understand breastfeeding.

In the last month I have heard of four dramatic incidents involving breastfeeding in public, and the frequency of such reports makes me realize that the subject strikes a deep chord with the American public. I am hopeful that the retuning of this deep chord means that we are actually on the verge of becoming a breastfeeding culture.

In June, www.mothering.com reported on a demonstration by breastfeeding moms outside ABC headquarters in New York City. The lactivists were protesting comments by Barbara Walters that she and others felt "very uncomfortable" when they saw a mother breastfeeding her baby next to them on a plane.

Later that month, Seattle's ABC news commentator Ken Schram defended Walters when he compared public breastfeeding to public urinating, saying, "Now, I know we're supposed to be living in an enlightened society and all, but I'll tell you what: when some woman sitting next to you pops it out and starts suckling little Johnny or Suzie, I think it makes most people uncomfortable! Yeah, I know. It's natural. Well, so is urinating, but most folks don't up and pee in a glass jar in the middle of the mall." In response to this outrageous comment, 150 Mothering readers and other breastfeeding supporters gathered at the Seattle Center on June 27. Schram not only failed to apologize, he implied that brazen breastfeeding mothers were the problem. "A little modesty goes a long way," he said patronizingly.

A couple of weeks ago, I heard from a mother in Albuquerque whose friend had been asked to leave an amusement park because she was breastfeeding in public. Just this last weekend, there was actually a television debate about breastfeeding in public in which CNN commentator Tucker Carlson said he opposed it.

The breastfeeding-advocacy community has used these outrages as opportunities for education. At one demonstration, participants handed out copies of the recent American Academy of Pediatrics statement on breastfeeding, which lists lack of support in society as one of the obstacles to breastfeeding success. With a national goal of 75 percent breastfeeding initiation by the year 2010, we still have a long way to go in helping mothers feel comfortable breastfeeding in public.

I take issue with those who suggest that breastfeeding mothers just stay home. First, the suggestion is patently misogynist. Second, it is impossible for a mother to control her baby's need to nurse. If a mother brings a breastfeeding baby into public, the baby will inevitably need to nurse. Nursing cannot be put off because it is inconvenient. The woman has the choice between feeding her baby in public and letting him or her cry. The mother cannot run blocks through the parking lot to nurse her baby in the car. She can't find a quiet place in a public bathroom because few exist.

In fact, our public spaces lack private places, and not many public places accommodate nursing a baby or changing a diaper. It is cruelly paradoxical that new mothers are encouraged to breastfeed without any idea of how much society and other people will undermine them. When it comes to going out in public to do what everyone else does, only clothing-store dressing rooms and bathroom stalls are spaces predictably private enough for mothers and infants. This is not good enough. Breastfed babies normally nurse almost continuously during the first few weeks and months as they build up the milk supply. Infant humans cannot simply be stashed at home while mommy runs off for her errands. Baby needs to be carried around so that breastfeeding is readily available, as breastmilk is low in fat and babies must feed often.

It's not a simple matter or advisable practice for mom to leave her breastfed baby at home with a bottle while she shops. Breastfeeding and bottle-feeding are not simply interchangeable, and there are distinct disadvantages to a bottle for a breastfed baby. Even more important, it is elitist to assume that everyone has someone to watch her baby.

And what about the baby? Doesn't the baby have nutritional rights? Does the baby have a right to breastmilk? If so, how absurd to limit the places where a baby can breastfeed because of unreasonable projections and ignorance about how breastfeeding works.

Barbara Walters says that breastfeeding in public makes her "uncomfortable." I think a lot of people feel this way, but it's not a legitimate reason for limiting breastfeeding in public. In fact, it's all the more reason to encourage it. I suspect that people feel uncomfortable when they see breastfeeding in public because they can't stop staring, and they interpret this as prurient interest. I believe that they can't take their eyes off breastfeeding simply because they have not seen it before. It is a natural human instinct to want to see the feeding of our species. It does not mean that we see the breast as sexual. It simply means that breastfeeding is naturally fascinating. You simply cannot expect to refrain from staring at something you have never seen before. For those in a breastfeeding culture, however, it becomes commonplace.

Ken Schram equates breastfeeding with public urinating, implying that breastfeeding is both a private affair and a part of our animal nature that should be hidden away. This reveals a great deal about our cultural biases. I have already argued that it is impossible to keep breastfeeding private if the human rights of women and infants are to be respected. It is precisely because of its animal nature that breastfeeding should be embraced rather than avoided in public. It is only through making breastfeeding common in the public sphere that we will become a breastfeeding culture. And it is impossible for us to reach our health goals as a nation if we do not become a breastfeeding culture.

The fact that someone would actually debate the question of breastfeeding in public as if it were simply a lifestyle choice, like walking your dog without a leash or skateboarding on the sidewalk, reveals a gross ignorance of human anatomy and physiology. One must know nothing about breastfeeding to assume that one could simply feed one's baby at home in order not to have to bother with feeding in public. There is simply no argument against such ignorance, which points to the logical conclusion that more education is needed. I'm glad that most groups that have demonstrated against these absurd remarks have used them as educational opportunities.

Some of the press about women who have demonstrated against these insulting comments has been dismissive to lactivists. In fact, one website, The Bitch Girls (www.thebitchgirls.us/), agrees with Tucker Carlson that "the lactivists seem to go out of their way to attract more attention to their naked breasts. The site recommends sending breastfeeding moms to the bathroom. Lactivist, on the contrary, is a respected label that has been used proudly for years by breastfeeding advocates, many of whom have been instrumental in improving breastfeeding policy internationally. I take offense when sincere demonstrators are dismissed and marginalized by labels. But I also realize that strong opposing emotions must be aired in order for breastfeeding to become assimilated into the culture.

The Bitch Girls site echoes the concern expressed most often by those who oppose public breastfeeding: modesty. In many ways, it is ludicrous to even discuss modesty in the context of breastfeeding when scanty women's clothing is so well tolerated in the media, at the workplace, and in public on most other occasions. It is obvious, then, that this argument is a foil for those who are uncomfortable seeing a woman breastfeed in public because they are underexposed to breastfeeding in general. And it is further evidence of prejudice toward women even, unfortunately, among women.

Do we breastfeeding moms have any responsibility to be discreet when we breastfeed? I was active in La Leche League in the 1970s, when directives came out from headquarters before conferences urging us to be considerate of others when we breastfed in the hotel and to do so discreetly. There were those who took umbrage at this well-intentioned advice, but in fact most of us are discreet in public simply because of our own modesty and the fact that no one enjoys being stared at. However, the baby is an active participant in nursing and sometimes can make it difficult if not impossible to be discreet. Also, some moms are insulted by the suggestion that they should cover up while breastfeeding simply because others are uncomfortable with something totally natural.

It's important that we take the higher road and not polarize ourselves with such ridiculous posturing. Let's not knock heads with those who appear to denigrate breastfeeding. Let's educate them. The cover of the January-February 2004 issue of Mothering showed an infant breastfeeding. It was very artistic and tasteful, but the nipple was visible. If you visit a store that carries magazines today, you will see that one can be almost totally naked on the cover of a magazine on the newsstand as long as the nipple is hidden.

We at Mothering did not even consider that the cover would be controversial because we are so accustomed to witnessing breastfeeding. However, others did not see it the same way, and in one local store the issue in question was covered up. They put a blank piece of paper over the image, with only the logo showing. This was done by a store clerk, at the request of a customer who was offended by the nipple cover. Our local newspaper, the Santa Fe New Mexican, did a front-page story on the covering of the cover, and local media followed the story closely and incredulously. As it turned out, the owner of the store was a reader of Mothering, and was mortified that her clerk had covered the magazine. The problem was that she had no store policy for this kind of situation, only a policy for pornography. Simply creating a store policy so future employees know what to do with a breastfeeding cover would help tremendously.

Soon after this incident, a natural-foods grocery on the East Coast sent back their copies of the same issue, then had to go to another local store to buy more when local breastfeeding moms questioned their decision and wanted their Mothering magazines. The moms were cordially accommodated by the store when they came for their nurse-in, and everyone learned a lot.

I find that in most cases the public is supportive of breastfeeding and understands its importance. That was not so when I was a young mom, and we have surely made progress. It is often lack of a store policy, intimidation or sensationalism by an extreme individual, or simple ignorance that causes people to object to breastfeeding in public or images of breastfeeding. They are simply afraid of the natural world and, hopefully, can be gently reminded of it. Nurse on, you lactivists. We're almost there.

    My Maddie Girl,

We have officially made it through week number two and not only are you still alive, but you are thriving!  Daddy and I have actually been left alone with you for 4 whole days this week and we have done quite well if I do say so myself.  You are still eating wonderfully and have really gotten the hang of breast feeding.  You pull yourself off and re-latch yourself when you decide that you want more and often times you finish a feeding with a look of contentment and milk running down your cheeks…..it's really very cute!  I also love when you play with your hands while you are nursing, you clasp them together and touch your face and sometimes even grab mommy's bra.

Your cheeks are filling in and your arms and legs look a little meatier.  You are looking more like a chubby baby and less like a teeny tiny infant and although it lets me know that you are getting enough nourishment it makes me sad that you are already changing.  I wish that I could package up what it feels like to hold you while you are so little….you are only 2 weeks old, but already you are not the same as you were last week and I am already having a hard time remembering what it was like cradling you when you were just born.  If I could package up that feeling I would love to open the package every now and then and vividly remember what you felt like.  Hopefully the pictures I have will be reminder enough.

You have started showing us a little bit of your personality through grunting.  You grunt all the time and for many different reasons, and it's so much fun to watch you and listen to your grunting.  It actually makes Mommy laugh out loud quite often and I've nick named you the grunter.  You are also doing this funny thing with your head where you shake it from side to side quickly with your mouth open and its cute most of the time, unless you are angry and crying and we are trying to put a pacifier in and can't get you to stop shaking your head.

We had a big milestone this week…..your belly button stump fell off!  Hooray you are a big girl now.  Grandma was visiting us for the weekend and we went out to run some errands and when we got back to the house Mommy went to change you and noticed that your black belly button stump was gone.  Mommy and Daddy had to search through your clothes to try and find it and finally found it up near your right arm.  Daddy was really cute and was worried that maybe the stump fell off too soon and that we did something to make it come off early and might have hurt you…..he freaked out a little bit.  Mommy explained to him that the stump is supposed to fall off between 7 and 14 days and yours fell off at 10 days which is perfectly normal.  But it was cute seeing Daddy so concerned for you…..he sure does love you a lot.  Your belly button looks like it is an innie, but when you get mad and cry, or when you are trying to poop, the belly button pops out a bit, so you may have a half innie half outtie.

Things are going okay with the sleeping.  You are on your own schedule and we work around that.  Some nights you sleep really well and only wake up to nurse once and some nights you wake up every 2 hours.  Sometimes it is really hard and Mommy wishes that you could sleep through the night, but I realize that your little tummy can not hold enough food to get you though an entire night and that breast milk does not fill you up as much as formula might but to me it's not an option to feed you formula when I can provide the perfect food for you myself.  And EVERY time I get up with you in the middle of the night to nurse you, I find myself staring at you in awe and loving that we have these beautiful times to bond!   I just need a minute or 2 to wake up first.

Week 2 was perfect and I really enjoyed spending it with you.  Everyday that goes by I find myself amazed by something else that you have done.  I am glad that you are healthy and perfect and I look forward to week 3.

    Hugs and Kisses,
    Mommy

We had Dan's friends John and Vikka from Missouri stay over with us while they were on vacation.  We hadn't seen them for about two years and it was really nice to get the chance to catch up.  We didn't really get to do anything though becaus Maddie is still pretty little and I am still getting the hang of breast feeding and am trying not to be out of the house for too lonfg in case I leak, or Maddie needs to eat.....so unfortunately it was probably a boring visit for them!  But they did bring us a present that really rocks....it's a warm cover to go over the car seat so the baby can stay warm during the winter months.  Vikka is a pattern maker and creates samples for designers.  This particular sample is going to be made for a certain line at Nordstrom and possibly Target.  There are covers like this on the market, but none exactly like it and mine is the very first one.....technically it's stolen because Vikka made it for me, and not the woman who created the idea, but don't tell anyone!!  lol.  Here is a picture below....notice the roses.....you know......Madeline Rose.  Very cute!
Other big news.....I got a new cell phone.  It was time for Dan and I to upgrade our phone on our family plan with Cingular and I got this really cute teeny tiny phone.  I don't really know how to use it yet, but I really like it and it seems to get better reception/coverage than my last phone.  I'm just a little nervous that I am going to lose it in my purse on a regular basis....it's that small......picture below, and keep in mind that a nail polish bottle is really small.

Cheri my mother in law was here with us this weekend and it was nice having her here.  She took us grocery shopping and stocked our fridge which was soo wonderful.....she also cooked and cooked and stocked our freezer with caseroles and other yummy things that can be eaten in the future.  We won't need to cook for a very long time!  We also went to the Smithfield outlets and got Maddie a pretty party dress for our friend Ivy's wedding on October 7th....she is going to look so beautiful in the dress, it's super cute.  At this point pretty much everyone has come to see our precious girl so that just leaves the three of us to start getting used to each other and our routines.  Dan went back to work today.....although very late, and I feel pretty good about being alone with Maddie during the day.....I don't think that I can ruin her!  lol.  So, I guess that's it for now.  My pretty girl needs to be changed and I have some cleaning up to do.  Ciao.

    My Darling Madeline,

One week ago today I was in the hospital bringing you into this world.  It was the most amazing experience I have ever been through!  While I was pregnant with you I dreamed about what you would look like and how it would feel to finally hold you in my arms, and on September 12th I finally got to see you and hold you.  You were so beautiful and perfect and you fit into my arms like you had always been there.  I was in love with you at first sight.

It's amazing how fast a week can fly by, and yet it feels like such a long time ago that we were in the hospital.  You are so tiny, but have accomplished so many things in just 7 days.  We forced you into this world and you handled going through the labor process like such a champ!  You took your first breath and cried for the first time.  I was so happy when I heard your first little cry and I couldn't believe how small you looked when they put you on my chest.  You came out and immediately started sticking out your tounge and suckling and you ate for the first time within the first hour you were alive.  Mommy was so happy that she was able to feed you so early on.  You also learned how to go to the bathroom.  It wasn't until the second day, but you peed and pooped like a champ.  We even called Grammy and told her about it because we were so proud of you.  You also were a good sleeper right from the start.  It was hard work being born and you slept and slept and slept, we even had to wake you up for every feeding for a few days because you were so tired.

Since we've been home you have received your first flower delivery from Auntie Stephanie and your first cross country visitor when Papa took a red eye flight and showed up to surprised us.  On your 5th night home, you kept Daddy and I up all night crying because you had some fierce gas and Mommy cried along with you because it was so hard seeing you upset and not being able to do anything about it.  You peed on Mommy and Grammy for the first time and the second time and the third time….you seem to pee better when you have no diaper on, and you also had your first poopie diaper blow out where it went all the way up your back and all over the changing table.  You were really upset!

Today was a tough day for Mommy because Grammy went back home to California and I was very sad to see her go, but your beautiful little face reminded me of all the wonderful things that I have here in North Carolina and the new family that Daddy and I have created in bringing you into our lives.  Every time I look into your eyes, or see you bring your hands to your face in an adorable pose I fall more and more in love with you and am overcome with emotion.  You are a brand new slate and the start of an amazing journey, and I am so blessed to have the honor of helping you to become the person God has planned for you to be.  My love is yours forever!!!

    Let the journey begin!

    Love,
    Mommy

  • It's that time

    Current mood:anxious
Dan is packing the last few items into our overnight bag and then we are heading out to the hospital.  Overall I am doing good......although I have randomly started crying multiple times today and yesterday.  I am afraid of what I don't know, and I am nervous about being a mom.  Everything that can be planned is planned and I am prepared in all of the ways that I should be, but I am still worried that my mternal instincts won't kick in and I'll want to leave her at the hospital.  Am I totally weird?  Keep us in your prayers and the next you hear from me I'll have my Madeline and hopefully some pictures for you.
  • The plan

    Current mood:sleepy
I went to my Dr. on Friday and had an ultrasound.  The baby is looking good and has an appropriate amount of amniotic fluid to live in.....other than her running out of room, she appears content.  She also appears to be big......remember late pregnancy ultrasounds are approx. 20% incorrect, but they are saying she looks to be about 9 pounds!  That sounds big, but I feel like I can handle it....plus, there are smaller women than me who give birth to bigger babies than that, so I am feeling confident.  My Dr. also did another exam on me and although I was not very happy about going through it all again, it wasn't as bad as the first exam just because I knew what to expect.......don't get me wrong, it HURT, but I didn't moan and yell this time......I think they should hand out lolli pops after making their patients go through things like that......I mean you get one at the doctor after a shot and that is no where near as bad!!!!  Anyway, I had no change from Tuesday.....3 days had gone by and I was still 1 centimeter dilated and 80% effaced.  I was pretty bummed, I thought I'd have progressed at least a little bit, but nada.  So, we came up with a plan.  Finally a plan!  The plan is based on me not going into labor on my own before Monday at 4:00.  If no baby arrives before then, I am to check into the hospital on Monday afternoon at 4:00 and get a balloon inserted into my cervix.....now don't get confused, it's not like a fun party balloon, it is a not so fun help me dilate and thin out labor balloon.  It is supposed to bring me to 4-5 centimeters by slowly opening.  What my Dr. told me though, is that I will be sleeping while this dilation is happening and it should not hurt!!  How cool is that?  I'll be halfway there and won't have to feel anything.  Anyway, Tuesday morning I should be further dilated and they will then start me on pitocin to get my contractions going, and from there it's all down hill......or up hill depending on how you're looking at it. lol.  I didn't want to get induced and I still would rather have things happen naturally in the next 2 days, but as I will soon be 4 days past my due date, I am kinda happy that there is an end in sight......that there is a plan and I will be seeing my baby on Tuesday at the latest.  It makes me feel settled and calm.  God is watching over me and Madeline and this whole delivery is in his hands......it will turn out the way that it is supposed to because he has the plans for my life already layed out.  I feel good.  I'll update ya'll as soon as we have breaking news......because the changes with my cervix/uterus are news worthy events ya know!  hahaha.  peanut butter snack and bed.  Goodnight.
  • My due date

    Current mood:tired
Today is my due date!  Hooray I've made it to my due date!!  At this point though, it means nothing.  I got my weekly pregnancy e-mail from babycenter.com and it indicated that since I am now 40 weeks pregnant, I should have my baby.....but I don't.  They obviously don't have an update for the "in limbo" period after your due date arrives and passes by.  I feel okay though, my mom arrived yesterday from Califronia and today we went shopping at the Smithfield outlets and got a couple of baby outfits and a couple of nursing shirts for me.....we walked around from 12:00 till 5:00 hoping that it would help my labor start......nothing yet!  I am feeling uncomfortable and tired, but other than that not many signs that there is going to be a baby coming today.  I have my ultrasound tomorrow and don't really expect to discover anything other than another view into my womb.  I think that we are going to go out to dinner tonight.....maybe I'll eat something spicy to kick start labor......more than likely it won't work.  Oh well.  My bags are packed and I'm ready to go.....insert John Denver.....all I need now is to start feeling some pain.....I think this is the first time in my life I am wishing for pain, go figure.  Well, I guess that's it for now.  Not very exciting.
  • good news.....bad news

    Current mood:optimistic
The good news is that things are progressing.....the bad news is that they are not progressing very quickly.  I had my Dr. appt. this morning and may I say that it HURT!!  I was never a sick kid, I've never broken anything the worst of the painful things that I have been through was a sprained ankle in 8th grade and that didn't hurt as much as my Dr's hand pushing up inside my cervix.  Anyway, now for the stats:  I am officially 1 centimeter dialated and 80% effaced.  He said that Madeline has dropped so low that she is practically at my knees.....which I am taking as a good thing and not bad, and he touched her head while he was up inspecting my special places.....which is kinda weird and kinda cool at the same time.  He also dislodged my mucous plug so I have been having crampy feelings and discharge all day.
So, here is the plan.....we are going to wait until Friday (past my due date...blehh) and if I have not gone into labor on my own, I am going to the office to have an ultra sound.  I think it's more because I told him that I wanted one rather than there being any medical reason for having one because this late in pregnancy ultra sounds are approx. 20% inaccurate which equals more than a pound off....but I want one anyway......I'm a picture freak.  Then, if I do not go into labor naturally over this weekend, they are going to induce me on Monday.  I basically have 6 days to coax my baby out of my uterus or they are gonna pump me full of hormones and force her out.  I'm kinda hoping that because things are progressing on their own with my big whopping 1 centimeter and 80% effacement that they will continue to do so and maybe getting my mocous plug messed with will help too!
On a positive note, my doctor told me today that unless my baby is the size of the freaks they write about in the National Enquirer.....like 15 pounds.....I should have no problem having a vaginal birth!!  I guess my large hips are useful after all.....I'll have to stop berating  them.  lol.  Please keep me in your thoughts!  I really don't want to get cut open and would like as natural a birth as possible.  That's all for now.  xxooxxoo

August 2006

  • 11 days and freaked out

    Current mood:exhausted
I just looked at my ticker count down thing that's on my page and it said 11 days.......11 DAYS!  I can not believe that I only have 11 days until my due date.  11 days!!!!!  When it was 210 days that was far enough away that I cound't even comprehend how LONG I still had to go.  60 days was much closer, but still seeemd like a long haul.  11 days feels like nothing.....in 11 days I will have the biggest experience of my life to date and I have absolutely no idea what it's going to be like.  I am not at all prepared.  I mean I am prepared in as many ways as I can, the nursery is set up, the diapers are bought, the books have been read, but what does all that really add up to?  I'm not ready.  And yet I am ready to not be pregnant anymore.  Every morning for the last week I've woken up and wondered "is today going to be THE day?"  As of today it hasn't been it, but the reality is that I could have my baby any time.  I am running out of days to take long showers and leisurely cook meals and take naps when I want to.  In the past there have been other times when I can count down 11 days......11 days till my birthday, or 11 days until I get my drivers' license.  11 days until I graduate, 11 days until I move, 11 days until I get married.......I've had all of those milestones and yet this one will probably be the BIGGEST in my entire life.  Even my second baby won't be as huge a deal because I'll have been through the 11 day count down before.  On this day, day one of my 11 day count down, I find myself very hormonal and extremely emotional.  I go from being overjoyed about having this baby and ready for her to be in my arms and no longer being pregnant to not wanting to have her anytime in the near future and hoping to stay the way that I am right now for longer than 11 days.  I am tired.  Too tired to deal with all of the feelings that are swirling around inside of me.  I am going to go to bed and try my darndest not to let my hormones get the bast of me and try to stay in that overjoyed and ready mind set.  Cheers.

Today I am officially 38 weeks pregnant and it feels like I have been with child for FOREVER!!  Everyone told me I would feel like this towards the end, but you really have to go through it to understand.  I can't believe how close I am and I want her to be done cooking and to be in my arms and not my uterus.  At the same time that I am writing this, I am also terrified that labor is right around the corner and I don't know if I am ready for the most painful event in my life yet.  In case you don't know me, I can be quite a wimp at times. We'll see how it shakes out.  As of today, I have been having sporadic braxton hicks contractions, and have not yet lost my mucus plug (as far as I can tell) I'm not really having any signs that labor is going to happen in the next few days, so I really might go all the way to my due date.  My doctors have said however that they aren't going to let me go much past my due date because of the gestational diabetes.....no need to let Madeline get any bigger.  Speaking of the diabetes, my blood sugars have been good and under control and my doctor said there shouldn't be any complications other than her being a little bit big.  (I learned that people with type I diabetes can have huge babies and that there can be organ failure and other horrible complications)  So, all in all things are going well.  As long as I can keep sleeping well and stay comfortable and air conditioned I should be fine for another couple of weeks, but hopefully Maddie won't take that long.....she was full term as of last week so she is more than welcome to come anytime now.
Finally I have pictures of Madeline's finished nursery.  It's been done for a couple of weeks, but I wanted Dan to be able to see it in person after he got home from Switzerland and I haven't been on the ball since then.  I personally am very happy with the out come and can't wait until I have a baby to place in the nursery....not much longer to wait!  I have made the executive decision that we are not ever moving because I don't want to have to do this again!!  Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't change anything and it was a labor of love, but a labor I wouldn't want to do again for a very long time.

Madeline's crib and the glider that I will be living in once she is born
I love the curtains in her nursery and the toy box/bench was a fun project, Dan and I sanded it and stained it to match the rest of the furniture.

The tall boy is FILLED with clothes and you can't live without a diaper champ!! (so I hear)
Changing table and the book collecton I have been working on since I was much younger.....here's to hoping she is one smart little cookie!
The girl already has a closet FULL of clothes.
The quilt that I made for my baby girl.....it's not perfect, but it's from the heart.
Up close pic of the quilt.....the cream pieces of fabric with the flowers on it are from my blankie that I've had since birth.
  • I'm a survivor

I have survived the great North Carolina heat wave of 2006.....also known as "Our air-conditioner was broken for 3 days and I am 8 and a half months pregnant"  I really thought that I might melt to dealth, but have surprised myself with how strong I am and I made it through.....I'm a SURVIVOR (insert beyonce singin' with her girlzzz)
It all started on Saturday with half of Dan's family visiting and staying overnight at our house.  I could say that they brought the curse, but I don't think they made our air units coil leak, so it was just dumb luck.  Anyway, they came over and us girls went to a bridal shower while the boys were left to check out tools, grunt loudly and eat too much food.  When the bridal festivities ended and we came back home I went from the nice air conditioned car to the humid mucky North Carolina air into my home which is normally a wonderfully cool 74 degrees and what did I discover?  There was no difference from the mucky outside air to the mucky inside air!!!  This is when I learned that my best friend during pregnancy, the air conditioner was BROKEN!!  Now in case you don't understand the magnitude of this I'll repeat myself with the appropriate level of horror......OUR AIR CONDITIONER WAS BROKEN!!!!!!  and I am VERY pregnant.  The boys worked at trying to make the air unit work and despite their efforts it was still broken.  We called the warranty company and told them of our problem and they didn't seem as sympathetic as they should have been.....in the fantasy world known as Gina land, they should have sent someone right over on Saturday evening and made them work until it was fixed even if that meant working late into the night......in the real world also known as North Carolina aka the bible belt south, they told us that the repair company was closed on Sunday.....you know.....God and all that, and they said they would give us a call sometime on Monday.  Now I understand that this news probably seems like common sense to most of you and any rational person would accept that and move on......well, I am not rational.  I do not understand why when it is 91 degrees INSIDE my house and I am as big as a whale I have to wait 2 entire days to get someone over here to fix my air conditioner.  However, I did not have a choice.
So, on Sunday Dan and I went to the pool and went around the lazy river for a long time and then went to the movies to use their air conditioner for the afternoon.  We just barely made it through the day by staying away from our hot house as much as we could, but sleeping was horrible.  Monday morning as soon as I woke up I called Dan at work......have I mentioned that Dan has air conditioning at work.....anyway.....I asked him when the repair men were coming and was delighted to find out that they would be here between 12:00 and 5:00.....now what's the first thing that pops into your head when you hear that a repair man is coming in a 5 hour window of time?  The first thing that came to my head was that he would be there at 4:55 and I was going to have to suffer through the entire day of heat.  The second thing I thought was that I was not going to be able to go to the pool if I was waiting for the repair man's call.....#$z&.
Well, I was mostly right because he showed up at 4:30 and I did suffer through the entire day without any air.  But on the plus side, I learned that if you don't move at all for an entire day, you sweat less than when you do move, and I can see a nice glow in my skin from the day long steam and sweat facial I got.  Those lessons alone almost make the broken air conditioner worth it......no, I'm lying, it wasn't worth it......just hot.  Morals of the story:
    1. Don't get yourself knocked up so that you have to suffer through a North Carolina summer
    2. Always buy a warranty when you buy a house just in case your air conditioner breaks.....it's much cheaper than covering the cost on your own.
    3. Don't live in the bible belt if you hope to get anything done on a Sunday......everything is closed and for you alcoholics, that includes all stores for the buying of liquor.
    4. Once air conditioner is fixed, realize just how blessed you are that you have said working air conditioner and don't take it for granted.
  • My baby is home early (baby meaning Dan.....not baby)

    Current mood:ecstatic
Happy Happy Happy!!  Dan caught and earlier flight from JFK to Raleigh and will be here 2 hours early!!  I'm on my way to go pick him up and I am really HAPPY!  I can't wait to give him a huge hug.
  • Ways to get rid of guilt

    Current mood:bored
The puppy is gone.  I was going to keep her and try to find a home for her myself but decided that it was too much for me to undertake while 8 months pregnant and alone.  My biggest complaint was that she was filthy and more than likely had bugs and I didn't know how she would react to me trying to bathe her..I can't afford to get bitten.  Animal control came and got her around 10:00 this morning and it was a bit sad.  I wish there was something more that I could do, but I can't take in every unwanted animal.  We already have 2 dogs that are a handful and are not cheap and with a baby on the way one more dog would have been too much.  I hope she gets the medical help she needs and finds a good home.  Keep her in your prayers.....even if she is only a dog!

To get rid of my sad feelings and to cover my guilt for getting rid of her, I went on a HUGE cleaning spree.  Every inch of my house has been vacuumed. (I even used the long skinny adapter to get the baseboards)  I mopped the kitchen, living room, den and hallway.  I cleaned the laundry room and washed the dogs beds.  I dusted the living room furniture and cleaned the kitchen table.  I also pruned my plants and watered them all.  Let me just say the house looks great and I don't feel so sad.  It feels nice to have a clean house void of all the dog hair that is normally around..too bad it won't stay clean past tomorrow!  Boo-Hoo-Hoo.  Here's a note to everyone who reads my blog, (all 3 of you) hard wood floors are beautiful and a great idea unless you have dogs!  It shows ALL of the hair and paw prints and is such a pain in the butt to keep clean.  And for a pregnant woman about to pop out a baby......it's not very easy or fun to try and keep them clean!!  There's my 2 cents for the day, take it or leave it.

My body hurts from my cleaning frenzy and I feel restless.  I don't know what to do with myself.  TV is boring the heck out of me and it looks like it's going to rain so the pool is out.  The nursery is completed so nothing left to do there and I finished my baby quilt on Tuesday..oh well for saving projects.  I could go shopping, I do need some more baby hangers, but that seems like such a boring thing to go shopping for and honestly I don't even feel like leaving the house.  I miss Dan and I know that even if he were in this country he would be working right now and not entertaining me..but at least I would know that he would be home in a few hours.  2 more days to go and hell be back.  I guess I can make it through as long as he comes back with presents!  Haha.  Well, Im off......there has to be something for me to do around here.  Later gators.
  • My house guest

    Current mood:worried
So my dogs were outside this evening and all of a sudden started freaking out and barking out of control.  I went out back to see what's up and there was a dog standing by our fence.  I went over to it and she jumped up on me and licked me.  I went across the street to see if my neighbor knew who she belonged to and he didn't know, but I discovered that she has a little limp and a sore on her face next to her mouth that doesn't look very good.  I brought her back home and took her inside and gave her a huge bowl of water and fed her some dog food.  She drank a LOT of water and proceeded to follow me around.  I introduced her to Tyson and Henry and after the initial "I'm cooler than you" attitude from my boys, they seem to be okay friends.  I called animal control, but they were closed for the evening.  I'm gonna keep her over night and take her to animal control tomorrow morning but I am a little nervous.  I don't want to make her stay outside over night because it makes me feel bad, but I'm pretty sure that she has fleas and I don't know how potty trained she is......she looks about 5-6 months old, so she could be okay, but I don't want to learn that she is not potty trained by having her pee in the house.  The other option is to have her sleep in the laundry room with Tyson and Henry but I'm not sure how that would work out.  She is a really good girl, and I hope that my decision to keep her tonight doesn't blow up in my face with her giving my dogs fleas or her ruining our new carpet.  Keep your fingers crossed for us and hopefully I will make the right decision.  Below is a picture of my house guest......think Dan will let me keep her?  Hahahahaha!

  • Maternal instincts?

    Current mood:tired
Last night I watched the National Geographic special called "In the Womb" for the second time.  And yet again, it was amazing.  If you haven't seen it, you should....even if you aren't pregnant.  Today I am 36 weeks or maybe 37 depending on if my ob/gyn is correct that I am a week ahead of the game.  Finally I am in my last month, although I still cant believe it!  Watching the show last night made me remember back to the very beginning and finding out that I was pregnant, my first Dr's appointment and my first ultrasound at 9 weeks.  At 9 weeks Madeline was smaller than the size of a grape and had a tail and now she is close to 6 pounds, filling up my uterus and looks like a newborn baby.  It's an amazing process how babies form and grow and I can't believe how far we've come.

In just a few weeks I am going to have a baby.  I'm going to have a baby..I felt it needed to be said twice.  Part of me is so ready for this, and the other part of me that has no idea what having a baby is going to be like is scared.  I worry about more than just "am I going to be a good parent."  Before I put my feelings out there I want to preface them with this:  I have always been a selfish person.  I have lived my life for me and made my decisions based on what would make me happy.  This mentality is not unlike what other single people feel.  Then I got married and things changed.  I now consider Dan a part of me and care also about what makes him happy.  Marriage is a partnership and even though it is difficult at times I love it.  And now baby makes 3.  But I am scared that Im not going to be able to give completely of myself.  I've babysat and been around a LOT of babies and there comes a point with each and every one of them when I'm done.  I don't want to hold them anymore, or deal with their crying and I give them back to their owners.  Don't get me wrong, I love Madeline and I have a different relationship with her in my belly than I have had with any other baby, but I have no idea what the reality of having my own baby is.  I know that I will love her, but will the selfishness in me just naturally turn to selflessness and patience when she arrives?  There has to be other people out there who have dealt with these feelings..I'm not the only one am I?  Hopefully when she arrives my maternal instinct will naturally kick in and I won't have the desire to pass her off and go take a nap.

Maybe its best not to blog my feelings when I am REALLY hormonal.  On a better note, Dan and I signed up for the Blockbuster movie program that is like Netflix.  Why not join Netflix you ask?  Well Blockbuster has the exact same offers for their plans, but they also offer 1 DVD rental per week in any Blockbuster store all for the same price.  We figured it would be cool to go into the store to rent a movie if something good comes out and we are anxious to see it, or if we have to wait over a weekend to get our next DVDs by mail.  And if we go out of town, we can use our in store rentals anywhere across the US.  So, I have 2 movies here waiting for me to watch and since Dan is out of town they are totally chick flick movies!!  I am really excited and am going to go watch them right now.
  • Re: my vagina.....don't read if you're squemish

    Current mood:chipper
Yesterday I got tricked at my doctor's appointment.  I showed up thinking that it was going to be just a normal appointment and wham.......they told me I was having my strep B test.  Overall not  a big deal, they take a little swab from my private places and I am on my way.......but then they told me that I was seeing Dr. Turlington (a man) and not my normal Dr. Evans (a woman)  Now I am all for male Dr's.......I think they have every right to go to medical school and learn how our vaginas work, but I myself have never been to a male gyno and it scared me a little that this man was going to see me down there in my worst possible circumstance.  I won't go into detail for those of you who are sensitive, but pre pregnancy I always made sure that things were nice down there before an inspection......clean, trimmed, etc. but since I didn't know that this was going to be happening at my Dr. appointment yesterday and that fact that I can't even see down there anymore it was only clean and with the weak-ish pregnancy baldder and the snail trail (read Jenny McCarthy's belly laughs book) down there, I don't even know how clean it was!!  They offered to have a female nurse do the test on me if I didn't feel comfortable, but I decided to get over myself and get the situation over with because really.....Dr. Turlington (male) could be the one who is on call the day I deliver my baby and he will be seeing far worse than what goes on with the strep B test.  Plus, I figured that he has probably seen it all and that I couldn't possibly be the worst.  All in all it went well, but I do believe that Dr. Turlington thinks that I am crazy.  I read far too much and ask him ridiculous (in his opinion) questions and he actually laughed at me yesterday...not in a bad way of course.  Told me I should stop reading.  I won't.  Baby is still head down although I thought for sure she turned herself around, and everything looks good so far.......not too much time left to go.....getting scared!
P.S. The diabetes things is going well and I got a good grade at my Dr. appointment!  Still have to eat food that tastes like cardboard.....no fun for me, but better for Maddie so it's worth it.

July 2006

  • Ultra sound . 3

    Current mood:tired
I just got back from my third ultra sound.  I don't really know how to put into words what I am feeling.  It's not like it was for the 20 week ultra sound where we found out that we are having a girl and it's not like the 9 week ultra sound when we got to see the baby in my belly for the first time......it's different.  It was much harder to see her because she has gotten so big and instead of seeing most of her in one frame, we got to see little segments of her.....a thigh, her spine, a shoulder.  And again the little bugger was head down and face down.....a good position for birthing but not so great for ultra sound pictures.  We did get to see her cheeks which look chubby and adorable and her little hands which now look like normal hands and not alien hands.  My doctor told me that I am about a week ahead of  schedule based on measurements she took from the ultra sound and that Madeline is about 5 pounds right now.  Dan weighed 7 pounds 9 ounces when he was born and I was 7 pounds 15 ounces, so we may get a chubby baby.  All in all it was a good doctors visit and I'm glad that we got a little peek at Maddie.....I just wish for once we could get a good profile picture of her, but I am happy that she is doing well and is healthy.  Now if we can just make time speed up so she can be here and not in my uterus that would be perfect!  Oh and by the way......it was confirmed that she is indeed a she.  I wasn't worried, but there was a little teeny tiny fear in the back of my head that we were going to end up having a boy who would have to wear a lot of pink, but.......she's all girl!!
  • Nursery walls completo

    Current mood:happy
I am really really happy with the progress that we have made on the nursery.  Dan and I measued out stripes, used a chalk line to make sure they were straight, taped them and finally painted the stripes.  It was a lot of work and my bones hurt afterward, but I think we did a fantastic job painting and I'm glad that's done.  We also finished the wall paper border.  It was the first time that either of us had actually put any kind of wall paper up and I must say we did a pretty good job.  Well.....it's still hanging on the walls, so it can't be that bad.  Haha.  With all of that done, all I have left to do is the deccorating which is the funnest part for me and what I'm looking forward to the most.  I'm waiting to start that until Dan leaves for Switzerland so that I can have a project to work on while he is gone.  Below are pictures of our progress.  I'll post more when the nursery is completely finished.  Wish me luck.
This is a picture of the finished stripes....all we need now is the border!
View of the beautiful walls with our fantastic border.

  • My day of painting

    Current mood:exhausted
I am so EXHAUSTED!  Dan is gone this weekend camping with his family.....why didn't I go you ask?  Well, being in my 8th month of pregnancy the idea of sleeping on the ground and living outside in a freakin' hot North Carolina summer does not really appeal to me.  The temp outside has been in the upper 90s with humidity all week.  I'm happy in my air conditioned home thank you very much.
So, I decided to make my time here at home alone useful and start painting the nursery.  I went to Lowe's and picked out the paint and started last night.  I did all of the trim work around the windows and doors and the baseboards.  I ended up staying up until about 2:30 painting and went to bed really tired.  I then got up this morning and did the trim around the ceiling and rolled out the entire room.  By the time I finished around 3:00 this afternoon I was sweating profusely and felt like I was going to fall over.  I took a break and watched some TV and then went back in and did some touch up work.  The room looks FABULOUS!  I however am not doing so great.  I'm glad I got it all done, but I seriously hurt!!  My back is killing me from bending over and my legs and feet hurt from going up and down the ladder and I am having problems with the simple task of walking.  I know I'll be fine I just need some rest and a couple of days, but I can't believe how much more difficult things are whilst pregnant.....I used to paint all the time with no problems, and now I paint one room and am falling apart.  My poor body.
So, below are some pictures of the newly painted nursery......it's not complete yet because we are going to do 12 inch verticle stripes on the bottom half of the room with red, blue, orange and the green to match the crib bedding and we also have a border to seperate the stripes and solid green, but you can see the first stages of the project.  Also, there is a picture of the bedding.  (If the green looks slightly different from picture to picture it's just because of the angle, or flash vs. no flash....it's all the same green)

Stay tuned for more pictures of the completed nursery......I'm gonna try and get Dan to help me with the stripes before he leaves for Switzerland on the 29th!  I'm gonna go lay down.....I'm spent!
  • I failed.....

    Current mood:scared
Today was D day and I failed.  The D stands for diabetes.  I took my 3 hour test which involves getting tested 4 times within 3 hours.....I passed the first two and then failed the last two.....which means that I have gestational diabetes.  After the first two tests I felt so good and was pretty sure (my doctor agreeed) that I was going to pass.  When the nurse told me that I failed, I started crying, right there in the lab.  I just feel overwhelmed and so tired.  I hadn't had anything to eat or drink in 12 hours and was so thirsty I was thinking about drinking toilet water.  I just can't believe that it has taken this long to get a final result.....I am now 32 weeks preggo and just getting a gestational diabetes diagnosis.  I feel a bit like a failure that I can't even get this right.  I mean how hard is it to be pregnant and keep a baby in my womb and not get myself or it sick?  I'm worried that Maddie is going to grow too big and that I am going to have a c-section which scares me to death.  I am also worried because I have to start testing my blood sugar at home and have to prick myself 4 times a day and I don't know if I can do that......I don't like when the nurse does it and at least then I can look away and it doesn't happen everyday.  I'm having a really emotional day and hope that I will be calmer and in better spirits tomorrow when I have more time to wrap my head around all of this.  For those of you who are the praying type, keep me and the baby in your prayers.  I really want for her and I to be healthy and for me to be able to get through all things diabetes related with my sanity intact.  I need a nap.
  • Update

    Current mood:cheerful
I am soo happy that Dan is home!  Not only did I miss him terribly, but I realized that I am not as functional without him.  Only one trip to Switzerland to go in August and he'll never leave me again. (hopefully)
Mice: The day after Dan arrived home, we went and took back the humane mouse traps that I had bought and bought the killer snap traps.  I was always okay with killing the gross mice, but didn't want to handle them once they were dead and thus bought humane traps.  We set the snap traps up with peanut butter and waited........the next morning we hadn't caught any mice, but the little buggers had somehow eaten the peanut butter off the traps and escaped with thier lives.  Day two, we decided to put cheese in the traps......you know what they say about mice and cheese, well it worked.  The next morning while Dan was at work, I checked in the pantry and low and behold there was a dead mouse with a broken neck.  I promptly called Dan at work and told him that we caught one and then didn't go back into the laundry room or pantry again for the rest of the day.....Dan took care of mouse #1 once he got home that afternoon.  We caught mouse #2 while we were eating dinner that same night.  We were sitting at the table and hear a snap sound coming from the sink area.....I actually didn't put 2 and 2 together but Dan told me that we caught another one.  We went over and checked under the kitchen sink and sure enough there was a mouse in our trap, but the gross part was it wasn't dead yet and it was flailing to try and get loose!!!  Yuck.  We closed the door and waited for a few minutes for it to die and then after dinner Dan took care of it!  I don't know if you can tell, but I am feeling much more calm about this whole issue.....having Dan home really makes me feel more at ease and I know that he will take care of the yuckie things that I can't handle.  We haven't caught anymore which leads me to believe that there were only 2 mice, but we still have the traps loaded and ready for war if needed!
4th of July: We spent the 4th of July in a pretty boring way.  We were thinking about going to the pool, but it was a bit hazy in the early afternoon and we figured that there would be aboue a million kids at the pool and didn't want to deal with them (we both love kids, but when there are so many of them at the pool, it is not very much fun because you get splahed in the face and have kids jumping over your head into the pool.....probably more fun once we have our own little water devil) so we decided the pool was out.  Dan was going to mow the lawn, but the mower seems to be in a constant state of broken-ness.....guess that's what happens with free.  So we decided to stay home and relax and cuddle......until I realized that there was a project runway season 2 marathon on!!!  I totally missed that whole season because Time Warner Cable in Cary didn't carry the Bravo channel and decided that I NEEDED to catch up.  Needless to say Dan was not that into this idea and went into the livingroom to watch a Law and Order Marathon.  I know what you're saying......how boring can we be?  Well, it gets better.  We went out to dinner around 7:00 to Smithfield's chicken and then took our spiffy camping chairs to Memorial Park in Clayton and people watched at a 4th of Jily community event.  Once it got dark, there was the MOST amazing firework shoe either of us had ever seen.  It was 25 minutes long and had so many beautiful fireworks!!  We both decided that this community event will be a lot of fun next year when we have Maddie with us because there were a lot of fun activities for kids.  All in all a nice relaxing 4th of July.
Pregnancy: Things are going well.  I have been sleeping okay except for my snoring husband and I feel pretty good most of the time.  My most recent symptom is shortness of breath and it's not when I'm active doing things, just kinda all the time.  I feel like something is sitting on my chest making a heavy feeling in my chest and difficulty breathing.  Hopefully this passes because it's not very much fun.  My doctor gave me a scrip for Nexium for heartburn and it works wonderfully!  I haven't had acid or heartburn since starting it.  I had my glucose test about a month ago and did an alternative test where the take my fasting glucose level and then I eat and get tested again 2 hours later......well, I failed it by one point and had to take the one hour glucose drink test.  I drank the orange drink yesterday (which was not that bad at all and I got it all down in leass than 2 minutes)  and then my glucose level was tested......I was told by my doctors office that I did NOT need to fast for it, but everyone I've talked to said you do need to fast for it and I was worried and decided not to eat......well, I failed that one too!  The nurse said that not eating actually sets you up for failure and although the results do not mean that I have gestational diabetes it does mean that I now have to take the 3 hour test next week and stay at the doctors office for a long freaking time.  We will finally find out for sure what is going on with me and if I do have gestational diabetes.  I hope that I do not, but am okay with whatever happens.  I know that I only have 2 more months and once Madeline is out of me diabetes would go away since I wasn't diabetic before pregnancy.  I can't believe that I am 7 months pregnant.....only 2 more months to go......it seems like it has flown by thus far, but now time is dragging.  I really want to have Madeline and finally have her here with us.  I think Dan feels the same way.  We still have not started on the nursery and I am getting very anxious to start.....I don't want to run out of time.  We are going to Charlotte this weekend but hopefully we will get started painting next week.  I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
I guess that's it.  We're back to our normal schedule at least until Dan leaves again in August.  I like having Dan home and being in our normal routine but I really want to have my baby......I had no idea that the wait would be so hard.

  • I need a man!!

    Current mood:stressed
My husband is still in Denmark and it has become painfully obvious to me that I NEED a man in my life.  I'm going to believe that it's only because I am pregnant, but I don't know if it's true.....and it makes me wonder how I survived without a man for so long.
I have asked the UPS guy to bring a package inside the house instead of leaving it on the front porch because it was too heavy to lift, I had my next door neighbor, Kevin carry a toy box/bench from my car to the house because it was too heavy.....Kevin also mowed our lawn on Saturday and now I have a problem that is so gigantic I don't think that Kevin will bail me out......we have a MOUSE in the house!!!  Or maybe mice, I don't know how many there really are.  Now for those of you who don't know me, I can handle bugs, I can handle spiders and even most reptiles, but I CAN NOT HANDLE RODENTS!!!!  They just totally gross me out.....their icky tails, bulging eyes, dirty little feet that scamper across my floor!  Yuck!!  ?Thank God I have not actually seen one yet, but there is mouse poopie in the cabinet under our kitchen sink, and on the floor of our pantry and there has been some on the kitchen counter and in our bathroom.  I don't know what I'm going to do, but I can not wait until Dan gets home to get rid of them.  I want them all to die right this minute, it grosses me out that I am living in a house with a mouse (the rhyming was not intentional)
I'm going to have to get traps or something but I think that I might just die if I have to deal with a dead mouse in a trap!  Please pray for me to have the strength to deal with these nasty rodents and pray for the souls of the mcie that are about to die.....dumb mice, they should just stay out in the field and eat plants and crap and not come into my house......now you have to be punnished!
    Come home Dan!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Why pregnant women should not be left alone while their husbands are in Denmark

I know....long title.....but there really was nothing better suited.
So, Dan left for Denmark today for 2 weeks and I have been left alone to fend for my pregnant self.  I had a pretty good day even though it was freaking hot....and I got a LOT of baby shopping done.  While I was at walmart buying baby shampoo I decided to pick up something for dinner.  I found a yummy looking mexican lasagna and headed home.  I put off making dinner right away and got trapped on the internet in baby websites and then went over and spent some time with my neighbors......I know this is getting long, but hang in there.
I get home from next door around 8:00 and decide that I am ready for dinner.  I pull out the lasagna and read the directions and realize that I need to bake it for over an hour!!  I decide to go for it since I don't want to make anything else, so I pre-heat the oven and stick the mexican lasagna in.  40 minutes into the cooking I am supposed to pull the lasagna out and tear the film off the top.  I get my oven mitts out and pull the bad boy out.......by this time it's almost 9:00 and I am VERY hungry.  I tear off the film and go to put the lasagnae back in the oven for another 30 minutes, I bend over and am almost to the rack when the paper-ish dish it is cooking in wobbles and FALLS FACE DOWN on the BOTTOM of the OVEN!!!!  There is Mexican lasagna all over the rack, all over the heating element, all over the bottom of the oven and the inside of the door!!!!  Imedately the lasagnae on the heating element starts to cook/burn and smoke begins to fill my kitchen.  I turn the oven off, turn the fan on and grab two spatulas to try and scrape the lasagna off the oven.  I get about 3/4 of it off and stick it in the paper-ish tray (imagine a pile of lasagna mess)  I know that I need to try and clean the oven up as best as I can, but I'm REALLY hungry by this time and decide to try and finish cooking the lasagna in the microwave.  I stick it in for 20 minutes and go back to the oven with an entire roll of paper towels.  I sop up a lot of mess and get most of it off the heating element but decide to finish the rest tomorrow when I am less tired and when the oven is less FREAKING HOT.  I pull open the drawer below the oven to clean up a little bit of lasagna that got on it, and inside the drawer all of our baking pans and cookie sheets were covered with lasagnae!!  It had snuck down to the drawer!  I ended up having tp pull all of the baking stuff out and clean them by hand.
Now you may be thinking that my story couldn't get much worse, but it does.  The lasanga finishes cooking for the 20 minutes I put it in the microwave for and I get it out and the lasagna noodles look like fried corn tortillas......I totally OVERCOOKED it and it was pretty rubbery looking.  Did I eat it anyway?  Hell yeah I did.  By this time it is 10:00 and that is WAY past the acceptable time for a pregnant woman to be eating dinner.  I would have eaten my hand.  Despite it being rubbery and there being small black bits that tasted like burnt plastic (probaby from the spatulas burning in the oven) it wasn't half bad.  Will I save the 3/4 of the lasagna that I did not eat for tonight?  Hell NO!!!!
Moral of the story.....pregnant women should not be left alone while their husbands are in Denmark!  I miss you already honey......hopefully the house won't be burned down when you return!

    Current mood:pissed off
So, there is no question that Dan and I love our dogs.  They are fun to have around and give us unconditional love.  We also want whats best for them which is why we buy the most expensive holistic food we can and always have fun raw hides and chews for them.  But, there is only so far our love for them can go, and today the boundry was challenged.  We took them both to the vet for their anual check ups and shots and since we moved, we tried a new vet office.  We spent about an hour and a half there and talked forever with the vet who would not stop talking although he didn't look either of us in the eye for some reason.  Tyson and Henry both got 4 shots and Henry was tortured and got his nails trimmed......we didn't get any meds, or prescriptions.......when we checked out I joked with Dan that it was going to cost $300.00 and he said no, it would be around $150.00.  Well, we got our total and nearly pooped in our pants....................$390.00!!!!!!!  Now, I know some people may think that it's not that bad and they are our dogs and pets cost money and blah blah blah, well those people should shove it up their pie holes......three hundred and ninety dollars for freaking shots?????  We so got ripped off and taken advantage of.  I feel sick to my stomach and want to just give the vet our dogs as payment.....seriously......has anyone ever heard of a vet being that expensive?  They are our babies, but strip the cute names away and they are JUST FREAKING DOGS!!!!!  I am NEVER again going to the Clayton Animal Hospital and I will discourage others from going there to for as long as I live.  Death to vets who rip off the common working folk.......they SUCK!
I'm sorry if I have offended anyone but I am furious.  No, actually I'm not sorry......if I've offended you then it's your fault for reading my blog.  Have a good day.
