Food Rules #3

I am so, SO exhausted! I spent the morning and early afternoon staining our privacy fence with a paint sprayer. I got one side done and have to finish the other side this weekend. It was really hard work! So, I spent a good hour on a blanket in the shade of our huge oak tree trying to squeeze a little nap in. Not so easy with 2 little monsters who are trying to sit on you. So, needless to say I am spent and oh so ready for bed. Good thing rule #3 is a short one! Enjoy.

#3 Avoid food products containing ingredients that no ordinary human would keep in the pantry.

Ethoxylated diglycerides? Cellulose? Xanthan gum? Calcium propionate? Ammonium sulfate? If you wouldn't cook with them yourself, why let others use these ingredients to cook for you? The food scientists' chemistry set is designed to extend shelf life, make old food look fresher and more appetizing than it really is, and get you to eat more. Whether or not any of these additives pose a proven hazard to your health, many of them haven't been eaten by humans for very long, so they are best avoided. -Michael Pollan, Food Rules
